For three hundred years, a signal has come from Tethra-7, an airless moon circling a dead star forty light-years from Earth. It is a single tone that rises and falls slowly, like breathing. The Halcyon was sent to find its source.
THE MISSION
After eleven years in cryosleep, the ship arrived. Captain Daniel Hale woke the crew and took the shuttle Wren down to the surface. Dr. Yuki Sato, the ship's xenobiologist, wanted to observe the source where it lay. The mission rules said: observe, do not disturb.
That is the last thing you remember reading before your pod closed.
YOU
You are Ash Corrigan, systems engineer. Your pod was meant to open with the others. It didn't. Now its battery has failed, and it has thrown you out into a cold ship lit only by red emergency strips.
Seven pods are empty. Nobody answers. The reactor is in standby, the ship is drifting, and through the hull you can feel something you can't name: a faint hum, rising and falling, somewhere above you.
STANDING ORDERS
Restore the ship. Find the crew. Bring the Halcyon home.

STEHENDER BEFEHL
Bring das Schiff wieder in Gang. Finde die Crew. Bring die Halcyon nach Hause.

MANUAL
How to talk to the ship's computer
The Eighth Sleeper is an interactive story in the tradition of the text adventures of the 1980s. You read what happens, then type what you do next: usually a verb and a noun. The ship understands English and German commands, whichever language is shown.

Shortcuts
AGAIN (G) repeats your last command. IT means the last thing you named. Chain commands with AND or commas: TAKE LAMP AND TURN IT ON
TWO LANGUAGES
Switch between German and English at any time with the DE / EN buttons. The whole transcript changes language, so you can reread anything. To check a single passage, tap it: it flips to the other language. Tap it again to flip it back.
MAP
The MAP tab draws your route automatically, one sheet per deck. A deck appears once you have set foot on it. Solid lines are paths you have used; dashed lines are exits you have seen but not taken yet. Tap a room to read its description again. The map keeps everything you have explored, even after RESTART. CLEAR MAP starts a fresh map from the room you are in.
PICTURES
Fifteen key locations have a picture above the text, and the title and both endings have one in the text, drawn line by line in the colours of the ZX Spectrum, like Melbourne House's The Hobbit (1982). Corridors and small rooms have none. By default a picture is drawn on your first visit and appears at once after that; tap it to finish drawing. HIDE folds the picture away. Under SETTINGS above you can switch pictures off or change how they appear; PICTURES ON / OFF works in the command line too.
SCRIPT
Like the old Infocom SCRIPT command, the game records your whole session: every command and every reply. It is on by default and survives RESTART and closing the page. Under SETTINGS, COPY SCRIPT puts it on the clipboard in the language you are reading, ready to paste anywhere. The end of the copy holds a short status line for evaluation.
To leave a note for later, start a line with an asterisk: * door command not understood. The note goes into the script at exactly that spot, costs no move, and the game ignores it.
HINTS AND TIME
HINT works in three steps: first a nudge, then a pointer, and only the third time the solution. If the orbit setting is on, the bar of eight blocks in the status line shrinks as the ship sinks; tap it to see the altitude in kilometres. Below 50 km a red frame flashes around the screen; check SETTINGS above to change the pace or switch it off, even mid-game.
TIPS
Read everything. The crew left notes, logs and recordings, and most puzzles are solved by something someone wrote down.
Some rooms are pitch dark until main power is back. Bring a light.
You can die. If you do, UNDO takes back your last move. SAVE keeps one save game in this browser.
Press the up arrow in the command line to repeat earlier commands. On a phone, the buttons under the command line send the common ones for you.

HANDBUCH
